The EveryBlock iPhone app
Get news near you — on the iPhone.
Live in an EveryBlock city and have an iPhone? You'll love our iPhone app, now available for free at the App Store.
What it does
The EveryBlock iPhone app lets you explore news that's happened recently in your immediate area.
We publish dozens of different categories of local news, drawing from hundreds of sources. Much of it is updated every single day. Examples of the information we publish:
- Business licenses (new businesses in your neighborhood)
- Crime
- Fire alerts
- Foreclosures
- Local deals / coupons
- Locations in the media (places in your neighborhood that have been mentioned in the news and in blogs)
- Real estate listings
- Restaurant inspection results
Depending on which city you're in, some things you can do with this app are:
- Get recent health inspection reports for restaurants nearby
- See which crimes have been reported on the street you're walking down
- Find out what places in your neighborhood have been covered in the news
- Get a sense for property values in your area
Note that information availability depends on the city. Browse around our Web site to see which information is available in your city.
How to get it
The app is available free and works on both the iPhone and iPod Touch.
Here's the direct link, which should open in iTunes.
How it works
Open the app and choose a city. It remembers which city you were looking at last time you used it.
Tap "Use my current location" or enter your location manually.
You can also browse lists of available neighborhoods and ZIP codes.
Once you've set your location, you get a simple timeline of what's happened in the area recently, from relevant newspaper articles and blog entries to crime reports, building permits and more.
Tap "Filter" on the timeline page, and you can filter the list of news by category. You can also change the search radius.
You can bookmark your favorite places for easy access later.
To access your bookmarks, tap the blue "open book" icon on the city page.
Manage your bookmarks by tapping "Edit" in the upper right. You can also access a list of recently viewed locations by tapping "Recent" at the bottom.
Post an announcement by tapping the "compose" button in the upper right.
Enter a headline, your location and an announcement. The location field will be pre-filled with "Current Location", using your phone's GPS coordinates, but you can enter in a location such as an address, zip, or neighborhood to override that, if you'd like.
Once you've finished, tap the "Done" button in the upper right.
The keyboard will slide away and present several options. Change the options if you need to, and when you're done, tap the "Post Announcement" button.
The final screen will show a preview of your announcement and a map of where it will be placed. If everything looks good, tap the "Done" button in the upper right, and your announcement will be published on everyblock.com. (You should see it right away on your neighborhood's page on the iPhone, too.)
